If you run a Frame 5, 6B, 7E or 9E on a Speedtronic Mark V, you have probably seen GE Vernova’s lifecycle language. The Mark V is “not produced anymore.” Only “limited refurbished parts” remain. The Mark VIe that replaced it already has a defined end-of-life phase. The OEM’s message is clear. Your next step is not.
We have repaired Mark V cards for utilities, independent power producers and co-ops since 2009. That includes more than 700 DS200 and DS215 boards. We have repaired the DS200TCPSG1A power supply alone more than 80 times. So we see how plants handle this problem in practice. You have four real options. Most plants combine two of them.
Option 1: Migrate to Mark VIe
This is the OEM’s answer. For a plant with a long remaining life and capital budget, it is the right one. A Mark VIe migration on one gas turbine usually runs from the high six figures into seven figures. That covers the controls hardware, the HMI, engineering, field wiring, commissioning and the outage itself. The benefits are real. You get current-production I/O, a modern security posture, and a supported product for the next fifteen to twenty years.
The catch is the calendar. Plants schedule migrations around major outages. Engineering lead times run a year or more. Every plant in the fleet competes for the same OEM engineers. If your migration lands in 2029, you still need to run the Mark V until 2029.
Option 2: Buy refurbished cards
A large aftermarket exists for DS200 cards. For a common part number, a refurbished unit can reach your dock in days. This is the right move when a card fails catastrophically, or when you have no spare and no time.
Two cautions apply. First, “refurbished” covers a wide range. Some sellers functionally test and recap cards. Others clean them and take a photo. Ask for the test procedure and the warranty term. Avoid anything sold “as removed.” Second, refurbished prices for scarce revisions have risen sharply since 2023. Fleets are buying up spares ahead of migration. A card that cost $1,500 in 2019 may cost $4,000 today, if you can find the right revision at all.
Option 3: Repair what you have
Most failed Mark V cards have one or two failed components on an otherwise sound board. Electrolytic capacitors dry out. Power-supply switching transistors fail. Connectors corrode. Optoisolators drift. A bench that knows the card can restore it for a fraction of the refurbished price. Repair also preserves the exact revision your panel expects. On a Mark V, that matters more than on almost any other control system. Card groups and jumper settings are specific to your unit.
The economics are simple. A repair typically costs 40 to 60 percent of the refurbished price. It carries a warranty as long or longer. A good repair vendor tests the whole card, not just the failed part. It also tells you when a card is not worth repairing before you spend anything. Our standard is a three-year warranty and no charge if we cannot repair the card.
Option 4: Build a sustainment plan
The plants that handle obsolescence best do not treat each failure as an emergency. They know which cards sit in the panel and which revisions. They know which cards have failed before. They know how many tested spares they hold and which spares still carry a warranty. That inventory usually lives in a spreadsheet. It is usually out of date.
A sustainment plan has four parts. First, an installed-base register lists every card, its revision and its failure history. Second, a spares kit covers the cards that actually fail. On a Mark V, power supplies and the TCEA, TCQA and TCDA groups fail far more often than the rest. Third, a repair relationship sets a defined turnaround and a warranty that covers the spares on the shelf, not just the card that just failed. Fourth, a periodic review flags which cards have moved from “hard to find” to “unobtainable.” That review tells you when Option 1 stops being a choice.
What we recommend
If your migration is more than three years out, or not yet funded, do Options 3 and 4 now. Get your spares tested and under warranty before the next outage, not during it. Use the secondary market for the cards you cannot repair or do not hold. Keep the migration conversation honest. Sustaining a Mark V for five more years, done deliberately, costs a small fraction of a migration. It buys you the time to do the migration well.
